A day with Dr. Tom Pomeranz
Sparc and the American Association on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities were proud to have Dr. Tom Pomeranz speak about transitioning classic day program services to a “work” oriented support model.
The all day event on Wednesday, February 10 at the Hilton in Downtown Springfield, titled “Transition: From Consumers to Producers,” provided participants with a common sense approach to transitioning the day program activities to meaningful activities that engender dignity and respect.
Dr. Tom Pomeranz spoke at length that “work” or expenditure of meaningful effort is the great equalizer.
“Work promotes the opportunity for disenfranchised people to gain dignity and respect,” he says.
The day session specifically targeted the direct support providers or as Dr. Pomeranz put it, “where the rubber meets the road.” He challenged them not to worry about things out of their control but focus on the things they can control, like simply treating the individuals the way you would want to be treated.
“You need to change the way you see things,” he says. “Ask yourself is it good enough for me?”
Basically, he says, put yourself in their shoes and take a look at the situation from their perspective. These individuals are like everyone else, they want to live a purposeful life.
The session also addressed a variety of management strategies which enable staff to feel empowered and comfortable during a time of significant change.
The participants at the session included agencies throughout Illinois, public schools, along with Sparc’s directors, managers and direct support providers.
Dr. Pomeranz is a nationally recognized authority, trainer, clinician and consultant in the field of services for people with disabilities. He has authored many books and is the highly acclaimed creator of Universal Enhancement, which teaches strategies promoting community participation and provides people with quality of life supports.
